Recycling and young people

I think we would all agree that without getting the buy in of young people then we can pretty much say that recycling has no future. But what do we do? Is, as in this scheme, incentivising recycling the answer?

Changing public attitudes to waste

Following on from previous posts about waste this article in the guardian a couple of weeks back might be of interest.

young people and citizenship

Some websites with useful resources about young people and citizenship:

Institute for Citizenship www.citizen.org.uk/about.html - An independent charitable trust which aims to promote informed, active citizenship and greater participation in democracy and society through a combination of community projects, research, education and discussion and debate.

CYPI www.carnegieuktrust.org.uk/cypi/home - initiative of the Carnegie Trust, set up to increase the influence children and young people have over decisions that affect them. We are fully funded by the Trust and work across the United Kingdom and Ireland.

National Youth Agency Active Involvement Team - www.nya.org.uk/Templates/internal.asp?NodeID=89411&ParentNodeID=89141 The Active Involvement Team promotes the participation of young people in democracy and decision-making and in the community. We have key partnerships with the Local Government Association on local democracy and the Hear by Right Standards Framework and with the Home Office’s ACU team on young people’s active community involvement, including volunteering and community leadership

WiseUp2Work Day

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has announced that National WiseUp2Work Day will be held on 30 August. The initiative will address the issue of safety for the under 21’s when they are starting work, apprenticeships or work experience.  Sponsored by the Learning and Skills Council and supported by the National Youth Agency and the British Chamber of Commerce, it aims to make employers, trainers, youth workers and teachers, and young people themselves, aware of the risks they face in the workplace and what they should be doing to mitigate them. Also, the website is an interactive online resource run by the IOSH for youth workers to use to prepare young people for work. The site looks kind of cool and has some interactive games on it, although I find it a bit difficult to navigate as it jumps about a bit – what does anyone else think?

SK Youth Board candidates have their say!

South Kilburn youth board candidates attended the Brent Youth Forum yesterday (27/07/06).  The event was designed to give young people in the area a chance to have their say, and ask questions to leading decision makers, including MP’s and local Councillors.  Among them were Sarah Teather MP and Dawn Butler.  South Kilburn made a real mark at the event and some of our young people asked some very leading questions to the panel, including “how do the panel intend to improve services for young people in the area?”

The event was the first real chance the south Kilburn candidates had to participate in such a forum and will give them the experience they need to be strong board members!

The Politics of Boredom

Doom and gloom article in today's Guardian about how the only clear message sent to teenagers by the government is one of relentless criticism despite 17 government departments being involved in youth provision: http://society.guardian.co.uk/children/comment/0,,1832244,00.html.

How not to increase recycling

One of the purposes of this blog is to share ideas and good practice. However, I thought that it would be a good idea to post this as a reminder that sometimes all the good work that is put in to a service can be undone so very quickly.

We will be interested to know what effects this will have on recycling rates and the Council's targets.

In Bloom

Building on ‘In Bloom’ competitions, which are successful but are seen as summer only initiatives, Crawley Borough Council is helping to improve the quality of the local environment through a community volunteering programme.
